UnitedHealth Group Health Insurance was founded in 1974 as Charter Med Incorporated, by a group of healthcare professionals and physicians who want to offer more coverage solutions for consumer health insurance. In 1977, reorganization spawned the creation of United HealthCare Corporation, which is made the parent company of Charter Med Incorporated. The new parent group introduced pre-certification practices for hospital admissions, medical office management software, behavioral health services, and drug/pharmacy formularies. In 1979, United HealthCare Corporation introduced the first senior health plans that were network-based, and offered the first Medicare alternatives in the private insurance market.
In 1997, United HealthCare Corporation is named to be the provider of healthcare insurance coverage to AARP members, which is the largest private membership network of senior citizen insurance and financial services today. By 1998, the company had created many innovations and participated in many sales and mergers of subsidiaries, which called for realignment of the organization. During these changes, the company became known simply as UnitedHealth Group health insurance, and created five integrated business segments that are known by consumers today: UnitedHealthcare, Ovations, Ingenix, Specialized Care Services, and Uniprise. In 2001, the company added internet-based verification and eligibility checking for physicians to their list of services, as well as a web-based portal for distribution among small business insurance brokers.
