Shelter Insurance Companies health insurance is a national mutual insurance company headquartered in Columbia, Missouri. Shelter Insurance runs in 14 U.S. states and encompasses a large family of affiliated companies.
The early roots of Shelter Insurance date back to March 10, 1914 when a group of seven Missouri farmers gathered in a small school to form the state's first farm club. They planned on pooling their resources to buy necessary farming supplies at volume prices. By 1917, the small club had joined with other groups to form the Missouri Farmers Association. After the group successfully found ways to procure goods at cheaper prices, the leadership began to think of other ways it could better serve its members. With no access to reliable insurance, the farmers took the next logical step.
In 1946, then a subsidiary of the Missouri Farmers Association, Shelter Insurance was founded. They originally operated under the title of M.F.A. Insurance. The Shelter name originates from the company's famous slogan, "M.F.A. is your shield of Shelter." The name was officially changed to Shelter Insurance in 1981. Over the years, the company has expanded its region of business to include parts of Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
Since its opening in 1946, Shelter Insurance has worked to become one of largest and most financially sound dealers of insurance and financial products and services. Today, they are one of the largest regional insurance groups in the country. Shelter Insurance is currently serviced by over 2,000 employees throughout their operating area.
Shelter Insurance employs over 1,400 licensed insurance agents who are trained to make sure they can serve their client's total insurance needs. Their insurance products have been tailored to specifically fit member's needs for home, life, car, business protection and more.

Daniel Boone Underwriters, Shelter Mutual Insurance Company, LLC, Shelter Reinsurance Company, Shelter General Insurance Company, Shelter Life Insurance Company, Shelter Financial Corporation, LLC, Shelter Enterprises, Shelter Financial Services, Inc., Shelter Benefits Management, Inc. and Shelter Financial Bank currently make up Shelter's family of companies.
In 2008, the Ward Group recognized Shelter Insurance as one of the top 50 insurance companies in the country.
