CIGNA is a major healthcare provider consisting of seven business entities. Together, they offer numerous health-related products to the public including CIGNA health insurance, medical, pharmacy and dental care services as well as disability, life and accident products. Additional services include; supplemental health insurance, limited-benefit health care plans, case management solutions and union and Government health care plans.
Although the name CIGNA came to fruition in 1982, the company's roots date back to the late 1700's. In 1792, a group of prominent Philadelphians formed the Insurance Company of North America (INA), the United States' first marine insurance company. Two years later, the company created its first life insurance policy by insuring a sea captain against death. In 1865, the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) was incorporated. In 1887, INA expanded its operations overseas by appointing insurance agents across Europe and South America. A few years later, CG also expanded by founding the Bureau of Financial Statistics branch of their organization. 12 years later, CG once again created a new area of business entitled the Accident Department. This allowed them to provide accident and health insurance.
In 1926, both INA and CG insured aircraft's and their passengers. Further expansion occurred for INA with the creation of the International Department to oversee services offered in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Only one year apart, both INA and CG installed electronic data processing systems in the late 1950's. The '60's brought great change for both companies. CG introduced dental insurance, added mutual fund investments and established an HMO in Maryland. Concurrently, INA acquired the Pacific Employers Group, acted socially responsible by funding care packages for less fortunate countries and added rehabilitation specialists to accept claims. In 1982, CG and INA merge to become CIGNA which chose Philadelphia as its headquarters. Since its official creation 28 years ago, CIGNA has acquired many insurance and finance companies that have greatly expanded operations.
The seven companies that comprise CIGNA health insurance; CIGNA Group Insurance, CIGNA HealthCare, CIGNA International, Intracorp, Choicelinx, CIGNA Voluntary and Union & Government, have won several awards over the years. These include, the "Best in Class" award for corporate education improvement, one of the "Best Places to Work for Information Technology" and the "Best on the Web" and "Best in Show' awards. Also, CIGNA has been given the "Best Health Plan Initiative for Consumer Directed Health Care" award, "Best Technology Introduced by a Health Plan Organization for Employee/Consumer Choice" award and the "Marco Polo" Award.
