Worthwhile Add On Health Insurance Coverage For Families
2010-07-22
Choosing the right health insurance coverage can be a very difficult task. You not only need to decide on the adequate coverage levels, but also on any worthwhile add on coverage for yourself and your family. You should research the differences in coverage between at least three or four companies and compare the pros and cons of each individual company.
There are a few factors that can help you determine which health insurance coverage is right for you and your family. One of the first factors to consider is the cost of the premiums. Ideally, you want a cost efficient plan that fits into your budget and that offers the amount of coverage your family requires. The most common types of plans are HMOs and PPOs.
An HMO is the more complete coverage, but only allows you to consult with medical providers in a specific network. A PPO plan allows you to use any doctor you wish, but also requires additional fees and deductibles. Many subscribers choose PPO coverage to have the freedom to choose individual doctors or to continue their relationship with a doctor with whom they have a history. HMO coverage is preferred by families looking for a more cost efficient option.
Another type of plan is called an indemnity plan. Under these plans, rather than requiring a copayment at the time that a service is provided, the insurance company shares in the responsibility for paying for the service, usually at a rate around 80 percent, after the service has been billed.
Among the add on coverage offered by most plans are prescription coverage, dental, vision, hearing, holistic, chiropractic, acupuncture, and even massage therapy. Prescriptions can be costly, and having a plan that covers a percentage of the cost is highly advisable. If you or someone in your family suffers from bad eyesight, it would be worthwhile to include the vision add on coverage to offset the out-of-pocket expense when purchasing eyeglasses. The same may be said for hearing aid devices, which can be cost prohibitive without additional coverage. Researching the options between add on coverage is highly advisable because each family is unique and has different needs. A family that has great hearing might have a member with a bad back who requires chiropractic care.
It is in each family's best interest to research each option and choose the right health insurance coverage for its specific needs. Lastly, having the right coverage can result in a healthier, more comfortable and longer life span as it allows you and your family to take care of health concerns as they occur rather than waiting until health issues become even greater problems.
