Why Your Health Insurance May Not Cover What You Think

2011-07-21

Health insurance is one of the most important things you can have in today's society. Without having a good health insurance policy, each person is forced to pay for their care out of their own pockets. Even if you believe that you only go to the doctor's once or twice a year and that nothing serious is wrong with you or your family health-wise, minor illness or injury can get expensive. For those that do have health insurance coverage, it's important to review the policy to ensure it actually covers what you signed up for. Many times, people simply obtain a health insurance policy, pay the premiums and don't find out until it's time to pay the bill that they weren't covered for a certain types of necessary tests or treatment. These insurance limitations can ultimately become costly.

One of the reasons for certain insurance limitations and why they pop up without you discovering them at first may come from how you obtained insurance in the first place. Many people continue to get health insurance coverage from their employer, who gets a group discount when offering the policies to their employees. Each year, there is an open enrollment period in which employees can choose to add to their policy, subtract from their policy, select a completely different plan, or get rid of their coverage. Some people opt to not make any changes and continue with the same plan even when there is a lifestyle change. However, it's those same people that neglect to review their policy and newer policies set out by the carrier. It's important to review all of the information available because the carrier may have tweaked the policies a bit, which may ultimately mean that something gets cut out, even if the cost remains the same.

The same can be true of policies obtained independently. Sure, you can choose to continue on with the same coverage without making any changes, but that doesn't mean the insurance company hasn't made changes of their own. Those changes are what sometimes raise the premiums customers pay, but that is not always true. Sometimes the premium stays the same but some parts of a plan are taken out. So if you go to fill your prescription and find out that your medicine is no longer covered by your provider, it may be too late to do anything.

Review your policy at least every six months to make sure that your coverage has remained the same. Keep all copies of paperwork given to you so that you have something to compare later. Ensure you're covered for what you're paying for.
