Why Health Insurance Coverage Is Important During The Winter

2011-12-19

Coughs, fevers, chills, and flu - all are symptoms of some of the winter's most annoying and dangerous maladies. During the winter, people are more likely to get sick because of the weather and all the other germs co-workers and friends are carrying around. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance to have health insurance coverage over the winter. When reform laws kick in on January, 2014, it is important that individuals who will be able to afford it seek coverage for the rest of the winter.

Although the winter provides more indoor fun opportunities, decreasing the changes that children will sustain injuries while playing outside, it is also the time of year when germs are at their best. Preventative care, like a flu shot and early winter doctor's visit, is important for individuals who want to stay healthy all winter. However, though flu shots are generally moderately priced, these costs can add up for individuals who do not have health insurance coverage.

Additionally, the costs multiply for those who do not have health insurance coverage and become ill - possibly because of a lack of preventative care. Drugs to treat illnesses and doctor's visits are expensive for those who are not covered by insurance. And some winter illnesses, like pneumonia, often result in a hospital stay, which is a pricy bill for the uninsured.

For this reason, though health insurance is available around the year, it is especially valuable in the winter time. In fact, preventative care may help people stay healthier during the winter. And early treatment of illnesses during the winter may make them shorter and even more bearable.

Individuals who do not have health insurance now may be able to obtain it during the second half of the 2013-2014 winter. This is when some health reform laws go into effect that makes purchasing health insurance easier. The reforms will lower health insurance coverage rates. However, those without insurance will be required to pay a fee unless they are given an exemption. For the cost of the fee, individuals will likely be able to afford coverage under the new system, so purchasing it is likely the better choice. Further, new tax breaks will go into effect that will allow those with moderate incomes to obtain health insurance at an affordable rate.

Winter time means more chances to get sick. However, new health reform laws that go into effect in 2014 will make health insurance more affordable. For this reason, people who cannot afford now may be able to afford it in January 2014. If they can, they should purchase coverage for the remainder of the winter for more protection.
