Why Health Coverage May Not Guarantee Easy Access To Doctors

2011-08-05

The costs of a decent health insurance policy should be low enough that you can afford it without being so cheap you miss out on access to timely and proper medical treatment. Many people choose the lowest rate without making decisions based on the level of care they expect. Having coverage does not automatically guarantee access to the doctor you want to see, so it's crucial that the correct coverage is sought.

First of all, health coverage and health insurance can be different things. Medicare and Medicaid are forms of coverage but not necessarily insurance because you have to meet specific criteria and cannot always get in to see every kind of doctor that you may need to see.

The only way to ensure doctor access is with health insurance. And more importantly, the right kind of health insurance is necessary. One wrong decision and you are left without a doctor to visit when you need one the most.

Most insurance companies offer a choice of an HMO or a PPO. HMO's require you to name a primary physician within the network of doctors for that particular carrier. You can see other specialty doctors only with the consent of your primary doctor. PPO is more expensive, but you can see other doctors out of the network for additional fees. There is also a spending account plan that lets you see whatever doctor you want and the costs will come out of the total account that you have in place.

You want to make sure that the health insurance policy you put into place for yourself gives access to the doctors you want to see. The medical insurance you have is completely ineffective and becomes a waste of your money if you are not covered for a doctor's visit when needed.

Saving money is possible by choosing doctors within the network, as long as you have access to them when you need them. Having to go to one doctor over another is an improvement over no doctor at all.

The best way to ensure that you have the coverage you need is to get quotes from different insurance companies. The more quotes you get, the better chance you have of getting a low quote you can afford.

Ask questions, too. The details should be given on every inch of the health insurance policy so it is fully understood. It is your health on the line, after all, so you don't want any surprises later on. Any reputable insurance company or coverage provider will give you a list of what is and isn't covered so that you have the knowledge to make the right decisions for you.
