Why Health Care Coverage Among Employers Can Vary Significantly
2011-06-20
Group health coverage can be a great way to ensure that you get the best of both worlds when it comes to health care. Individual plans can take care of many of the basic needs that a family or professional has regarding their health, and employer health coverage can often cover the rest of health services that are needed. Employers often do their best to provide a health plan that will draw employees in or help to retain employees that they already have, and these plans can run from extremely robust to very basic, depending on the employer and the kind of coverage they want to offer. What many employees want to know is why there is such a disparity in group health coverage plans.
In large part, it stems from the choices of the employer. When they begin to set up an employer health coverage plan, they must first look into what they want it to contain. This can be anything from very basic services like check ups or health spending accounts, or can be more specialist options like drug plans and access to doctors with areas of specialization and expertise. The amount a health plan will cover will likely be tied to the success of the employer as a whole, as the more depth a plan has the more it will cost to implement, and the more the employer will have to pay.
Employees are also responsible for picking up a portion of the cost of a health care plan at work, and the amount of this cost will vary from employer to employer. This means that not only can the quality of a health plan cost employees, but the amount of responsibility they share with their employer for the cost can also vary significantly. In some cases, an employer will choose to partner with another nearby business to offer very basic coverage to all of their employees. This kind of coverage is typically very cost effective but also limits the kind of services that can be accessed. Ultimately, an employer can choose the level of services they want to pay for and offer, and employees can choose to either accept such offer, or protest by leaving for a new company or negotiating with the employer.
Good group health coverage can help to fill in the gaps left by an individual health plan, and can give a family the edge it needs to get through a year with no health overspending. While employers can offer a wide range of coverages, they are under no obligation to offer a certain type or level of coverage to their employees and their families.
