2011-09-18
Given the risen risk of health anomalies, health insurance is a wiser option than bearing the medical expenses all from the pocket. But other than just selecting a suitable insurance plan for oneself, one must also consider the details concerning service area and coverage given by the selected plan. Every health insurance provider has different terms of services and service areas that are specific to the insurance company's norms. Service area of a health insurance provider is with reference to the area or countries where it has a license to promote and market their products and services. Employers must be living in the service area for taking up the insurance plan.
Service area is insurance firm specific. For example, a subscriber has a health insurance plan under a certain policy that has service areas only in the State of Ohio, would not get covered in any area other than the State of Ohio. The subscribers need to be extremely cautious while making claims for the health services utilized or being utilized by them outside the service area of their health insurance provider as this confusion is capable enough of making a great worsening effect in case of any emergency.
Apart from service area restrictions, an insurance company has business tie-ups with other insurance providers to provide their policy members all or partial health care in the places lying outside the jurisdiction of service area of the company. Generally, by these tie-ups company enables the subscribers to avail all or the minimum necessary services in case of an emergency. Services to be provided for the claims made outside the service area are decided by the insurance provider and its tie up company.
A person having full health cover under a policy may not get covered at all in area other than the service area. The reason for not getting covered may be either due to no tie ups of the service provider with any other provider in the area or due to rigidity of the health plan in terms of service area, i.e. a company having tie ups in an area other than the service area may not provide cover to a member because of lack of any such clause in the policy regarding services provided in other areas. However, if there is a clause related to services in other areas then the health insurance provider is bound to abide by the laws governing the contract between the insurance provider and the subscriber. However, subscribers are advised to look up for the services provided by the co-insurers in the areas other than the service area of the health insurance provider while subscribing for a particular health plan.
