Understanding International Health Insurance
2011-10-18
Traveling nowadays requires a lot more preparation and forethought than it did just a few decades ago. With the world experiencing the consequences of a down economy because of the housing crisis, bad mortgage loans and more, there is a higher possibility of injury due to protests or diseases due to lack of funds for proper health care in some countries. Although the cost of health care has gone up in the last few years because of the higher costs associated with caring for each American and the transition to include the new Affordable Care Act, health insurance coverage is still an absolute necessity. This is especially true if a person decides he or she wants to travel abroad. Some countries offer insurance and free medical care for residents and tourists alike, but an individual would have to do the research to find out if this is the case in the country where they plan to travel. However, international health insurance should still be obtained in order to ensure one's health and safety when traveling abroad, regardless of their health care stance.
Many health insurance companies offer an insurance add-on to individuals who already have a policy with them. International travel insurance is considered an add-on and can be added to an existing policy only for the duration that they will be away in another country. This helps keep insurance costs at their current level while extending their insurance coverage to include being covered in another country. It is important to speak with an insurance agent and make sure that they are able to add international travel insurance to the policy and what the costs associated with that addition will be. Also, understanding how much coverage is also vital before accepting the add-on.
There are companies that specialize in offering individuals international health insurance policies. In case the current insurance provider does not allow international health insurance or the costs are too high, a person can think about getting a third party policy to keep them covered. Depending on the coverage one seeks, most international health insurance plans will cover the basics such as a doctor visit or hospital visit and some prescription drugs. However, a person can increase the level of coverage to include longer hospital stays, surgery, X-rays and more to be completely safe. The level of coverage really depends on the individual.
It is also important to understand that health insurance companies will have different rates for different countries. This could complicate matters if someone is going to several different countries on one trip. Discussing all of the details of the trip and finding out rates for different countries is an absolute must.
