Three Ways To Make Group Health Insurance Work With Private Plans

2011-04-07

Group health insurance is a form of health insurance that is typically offered by employers in order to give employees benefits for remaining loyal to a company over time. Depending on the size of the company, it may choose to merge its plans with those being run by other companies in order to give the lowest cost to all employees enrolled, but regardless of whether the group plan is held by a single company or by many there are a number of things that will remain the same. First, employees will often be able to "opt out" of the plan if they do not wish to be members and second, the group health insurance plan will always be geared to providing the largest number of employees with reasonable care; it will not feature employee-targeted options or those for specialist visits. With that said, there are a number of ways that employees can make a group health insurance plan work with any private health insurance they have for maximum benefits.

First, group health insurance can be used to take care of basic doctor's office visits and the need for regular checkups and treatments. Private health insurance can then be used to "fill in the gaps" and provide access to specialists, ongoing treatments or surgeries that are beyond the purview of group health insurance. Group health insurance should always be utilized first if possible so as to save the largest portion of an annual yearly maximum in a private plan in the event that a consumer needs it at a later point in the year. Next, group health insurance can be used in conjunction with private health insurance to shore up the amount paid for items such as prescription drugs. With the right plans, a client can end up paying very little for their prescription medication as between both a private and group plan almost 100% of the cost can be covered and in many cases this can amount to a significant savings over time.

Group plans can also be a great way to ensure that families are covered as they will often come with the benefit of extended to both a spouse and children, even if the employee is laid off or the company goes out of business. This means that families can pay less for private health insurance and rely more heavily on their group plan in order to keep costs down. While neither group nor private health insurance can provide entirely for family or individual needs, a balance of the two types can help both an employee and their spouse and children to get the maximum benefit for their healthcare dollars over time.
