Three Questions To Have Answered Before You Buy A Health Insurance Policy

2010-12-19

Health insurance quotes are available at so many insurance companies today, so the competition between providers is rampant to gain business, especially lower health risk ones, to keep the costs of underwriting down. Health insurance providers ask varying amounts of health questions of their potential clients so as to properly determine how much it will cost to provide coverage. Many times, clients choose their provider based on health insurance quotes they received based off health questions they were asked. It is a good idea for prospective clients to ascertain more information about their potential insurer than what co pays are and what the maximum out of pocket amount is. There are three questions that a potential client should have answered before buying a health insurance policy.

The first question that should always be asked is if the company has a good reputation for paying claims. There are all kinds of places to ask this kind of question. The first place to check would be with the state insurance regulatory department to check for consumer complaints. Another place to check is with consumer reporting agency. If a health insurance provider has a reputation for denying claims or higher denial rates than average, then it should indicate that some degree of caution should be exercised prior to committing to a policy.

The second question that should be asked is if the plan includes regular checkups and preventative care. This might seem obvious, but a top complaint of insurance providers by consumers is that they never received reimbursement for doctor visits. This is a gray area in many policies and the terms for agreement in this should always be discussed until all parties are clear what the expectations are. It should be clearly written into a policy what type and how many visits should be expected during an entire term.

The third question that clients should ask of their prospective insurer is if the health insurance plan offers any sort of incentive programs or discounts through cooperative situations. For example, some health insurance providers offer a discount in the purchase of a gym membership or some sort of discount on their premium if they have no claims. This is a way for a client to further externalize benefits through things they are going to purchase anyway.

When it comes to watching out for things like health, questions like these should be asked of any potential provider. A health insurance policy is an important asset in the role of health care, and more information should be obtained before buying a policy. Health insurance quotes are great for core information, but these three questions should be asked to better arm oneself.
