The Cost Of Avoiding Medical Insurance Coverage
2010-10-25
Rising medical costs have made it almost impossible for most people to survive without some form of health coverage. By avoiding health insurance costs today, you are setting yourself up for serious financial hardships at a later time.
Medical costs have skyrocketed over the last few decades. Even a simple doctor's office visit or medical test can cost hundreds of dollars. The reasons for the increased cost of medical services involve doctors and clinics covering the risk of high malpractice settlements and the cost of new medical technology. The only reason that most patients can afford any medical service at all is because insurance companies pay for a large part of the medical fees. Without health coverage, very few people would be able to pay for their medications, lab work, hospitalization or other typical procedures that are important to maintaining good health.
If you choose to forgo medical insurance, you are not really saving money. You are merely postponing the payment that you will eventually have to make when you become ill. Insurance coverage allows you to spread medical costs out over a long period of time, so that you can make smaller payments instead of a large payment at the time of service. Very few people have enough savings to cover even a minor medical emergency without some form of insurance coverage. Even if you calculated the amount that you would pay to an insurance company over a year and put that money in a bank, you would probably end up short if you needed to pay for medical services.
The human body is a complicated working machine that can suffer from normal wear and tear. No matter how healthy you are today, the odds are that you will eventually become sick enough to need to visit a doctor. Even the common flu can be deadly if it is not treated in a timely manner. Research shows that people without insurance do not usually discover illnesses in their early, treatable stages. When a disease is discovered in its later stages, it requires more aggressive treatments that are far more expensive.
Medical emergencies that require a visit to a doctor or hospital can sometimes lead to long periods of time when the sick person cannot work. If you do not carry health insurance, you will be faced with the high cost of the medical bills at a time when you can least afford it because you have no steady income to pay the bills. The medical bills will continue to accumulate whether you are able to work or not, which can lead to severe financial distress that could have been avoided.
