Recent Legislation May Affect Health Insurance Rates For Arizona Citizens
2011-04-30
Health insurance is a major concern for many American families in states all across the nation and is something that spouses, children, and employees need in order to be secure in their workplaces and at home. Should an emergency arise, a family without proper health care coverage could easily find themselves owing thousands or tens of thousands of dollars to a hospital or unable to receive the kind of care they need in order to stay healthy. While a number of pieces of recent legislation have been created that will hopefully allow Americans of all economic statuses to obtain affordable health care, some health insurance legislation may increase the amount that Americans pay. Arizona health insurance in particular may be increasing in price, thanks to several new rounds of legislation in the state.
Arizona is currently facing a crisis, largely revolving around the number of illegal immigrants that are migrating to the state from Mexico and other countries. Concerns from those in power in Arizona are that these immigrants are using the health care facilities of the state but are not contributing to the cost of maintaining them. A number of bills, including the now-famous SB 1070 have been introduced at the state government level, all aimed at ensuring that those who are living in the state and using its facilities do in fact have the right to be there and are there legally.
These pieces of health insurance legislation in turn have a number of ramifications for Arizona health insurance as many providers seek to increase their rates to offset the use of services by those who are not qualified to be in the state. In some cases, there are concerns that those would should not be in Arizona are getting Arizona health care, using it, but not paying for it when the bill comes due. Since there is no specific Arizona health legislation in place to protect insurance companies from this potential problem, a number of providers are choosing to increase rates for customers across the board in order to offset rising costs. While this is a temporary fix, it is aimed at making sure that services can continue to be offered, even if there are those looking to cheat the system.
Arizona faces a number of challenges in the coming years as it looks to deal with the problem of illegal immigration and to find ways to balance the cost of its services with getting service to the people who are entitled to it. For the moment, many Americans with private health care coverage in the state can expect their premiums to rise as companies attempt to mitigate rising costs.
