Pitfalls And Benefits Of Finding A Self Directed Health Insurance Plan
2010-12-10
Health insurance coverage can be a complicated world, and many Americans find themselves swamped in a sea of options and policies, along with health terminology and quote details. This can be overwhelming for a family trying to choose a health care plan that is best for them, and can be frustrating when different types of plans refuse to list their services and benefits in the same manner. The American health insurance coverage market is changing, and new legislation will see the introduction of a new type of health care plan, but the three basic types of health care policies still remain - HMOs, PPOs and self directed plans. Over the last several years, self directed plans have been gaining ground on the two "traditional" choices, and there are a number of pitfalls and benefits that patients must be aware of.
Self directed plans are just that - they allow a patient to determine what type of care they will receive and from who. These plans will often feature either very broad networks of doctors or none at all, and give clients the choice of who they would like to see. They will also provide a far more direct form of access to policy dollars so that patients can better choose which type of health services will suit their needs. This ability to choose both services and providers allows self directed plans to be more open and understandable to patients, in addition to giving them a large measure of control over their own money and its spending. This can often make self directed insurance plans a very attractive option for families and individuals alike.
Some pitfalls do exist for self directed plans, however. Perhaps the most glaring is the difficulty that clients may have in accessing specialist services. In an HMO or PPO, specialists and doctors in the plan will all be a part of the same network and in many cases a client will not need a referral from their primary care physician to see a specialist about a medical issue. In fact, these plan providers will often sponsor or have a stake in health care centers which will have GPs and specialists under one roof, allowing simple and streamlined access to them. As well, consumers must be careful when purchasing a self directed plan to ensure that is in fact insurance coverage and not a discount plan as they can often share similar characteristics.
Self directed health plans have a number of benefits and pitfalls, but can be an excellent choice for a family that has the time and the desire to take an active role in their own health care administration.
