Medicare Health Insurance Benefits And Coverage For Eligible Children

2010-02-22

Health care coverage can be a tricky thing in today's economy. One of the worst things that can happen is losing a job that came with health insurance coverage for the whole family. Though it can be found, it can cost hundreds of dollars more in premiums and deductibles which is almost impossible when family income has reduced in size.

While there are a lot of insurance companies that will cover your family at a significant price, it most often is very limited in the coverage it provides. Start with the most affordable. If your income is significantly decreased, you may be eligible for government-funded insurance plans. These plans will insure not only medical but dental policies as well. Check with your local hospitals and State funded programs. Often, charitable hospitals will have a low cost plan for children within their network or work in conjunction with your state to provide a lost cost coverage plan. These government plans are Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare will only cover adults with disabilities or people over age 65. Medicaid will cover children up to age 21 and may further extend its services depending on the level of care needed for the patient. Medicaid will cover almost anything your child needs with a few exceptions that may require prior approval from the Medicaid office and further documentation.

The next plan of action is checking with the larger insurance companies for health insurance policies that are affordable. This is the more difficult avenue to use as the coverage is very limited and terms and conditions severely restrict what is provided to the consumer. Most, if not all, will not cover pre-existing conditions for up to sixth months if they cover them at all. If they do cover them, they will only cover up to a certain amount or have a deductible so high, it could not possibly be met within a year and then you start all over again the next year.

Lastly, try searching for medical coverage as opposed to health insurance policies. Medical coverage may provide a more basic level of service but things like a doctor visit, labs, x-rays and brief hospital stays as well as emergency room visits will be deeply discounted. They will often times also provide discounted prescription services as well. These fees are monthly and not as expensive and may or may not come with a deductible depending on what you choose. It is vital when choosing coverage to factor in not just the price, but the needs of the family. If you have children that have chronic illnesses, they may need more coverage than just what basic services can provide.
