How Individual Health Insurance Works In Case Of Emergency
2011-11-01
Individual health insurance, also known as a basic health plan, can often seem as though it will not provide enough coverage when a client needs it most, simply because of its name and its typically lower cost. While it is true that a basic health plan may not be able to offer access to things like multiple specialist visits or the best brand-name prescription drugs on the market, there are a number of ways in which such a plan can provide for a client in case of an emergency.
Every health plan is different, and clients need to start their healthcare journey with an understanding of exactly what they will be provided when they sign on for a new policy. Some will offer robust out-of-hospital options, making them great for routine doctor's visits or purchasing medications that a client needs on a regular basis. Others will be geared more toward emergency events and will activate in the case of a sudden injury or illness. Clients will also have the opportunity to choose what kind of premium best suits their needs for individual health insurance - if they are willing to pay more in the event of a serious health crisis for their provider to act, they can lower the cost of their monthly premium.
If a client encounters an emergency when under a basic health plan, they can expect that medical professionals will first check to ensure that their insurance is valid. This is unlikely to happen during an ambulance ride, and even if a client's insurance does not cover it, they will typically be taken to the hospital for assessment. Be warned, however, that ambulance costs can be quite steep, and it is worth having this kind of coverage for at least a few trips a year. Once at the hospital, staff will typically assess the type of policy that is presented and then inform the patient of what will be covered, so long as the surgery or procedure needed is not life or death. At that point, it will be up to the client to determine if they wish to proceed - in cases of emergency, a basic health plan will have certain amounts set out for each type of treatment or surgery, and these can range from fully covered to not at all. It is worth knowing before an emergency arises what a plan will cover, at least in a broad sense, and what it will not.
Individual health insurance can help to protect a client in the event of an emergency, and so long as the client knows their policy well, they will be able to make timely and informed decisions.
