How Health Insurance Coverage Could Change Due To The AFA

2012-01-03

Health insurance coverage has always been a central facet of the American lifestyle - in no other country has the development of private insurance companies been as aggressive or as bold. This has led to a situation where there are many providers to satisfy the needs of a large population, many of which now have quotes available online and can provide clients with coverage almost instantly. It has also led to a situation which the current federal government feels is untenable - that too many Americans cannot afford health care - and has led to the creation of the Affordable Care Act. This act, signed by President Barak Obama in March of 2010, is a four-year long process in which the landscape of insurance will be changed in order to give more people access to health care. It also means that significant changes will be coming to private health insurers as well.

One of the most important things that will be done by the Affordable Care Act will be the creation of a public form of health insurance that will be less expensive than traditional PPO or HMO health insurance coverage. While this care will be available to any American, it will not come with the same amount of specialty services and references to specialist physicians as traditional private health care. The goal of the public health care is to give those who cannot afford a private option access to basic health care services and less the strain on the system overall. It may also mean a greater competition by providers for consumer dollars as some consider moving to the public health option.

The Act also creates a body responsible for ensuring that both private and public health care facilities are providing care at a reasonable standard, and gives this body the power to shut down facilities if they do not meet the standard. There is some concern, however, that this oversight committee will lead to mountains of red tape and may mean that facilities are closed for no good reason or for longer than they need to be. Ideally, the body created by the Act will seek out those providers that are not following the law and prevent them from charging for service but not delivering - if that occurs, not only public but private health care providers will benefit from a system in which all services are on a level playing field.

The Affordable Care Act will not come into full force until 2014, when it will require all Americans to have some form of health care coverage. It is unclear to what extent, but it is certain private health care will be changed by this new Act.
