How Care Facilities Now Advertise Certain Health Insurance Coverage

2011-03-03

Health insurance coverage is a way savvy consumers alleviate the risk of incurring future medical expenses. There are many different companies offering health insurance coverage, such as Blue Shield, United Healthcare and Cigna Health Insurance Company. Depending on one's plan, medical, dental, pharmacy and even mental health costs can be covered by health care. But some plans, such as HMOs and PPOs, require one to limit their options to certain health care providers and certain health care facilities to receive the benefits of health insurance. For this reason, health care facilities are increasing their health insurance coverage advertising in order to draw in consumers covered by these health care plans.

A health maintenance organization, or HMO, provides health insurance coverage through certain HMO contracted providers, doctors and hospitals. These providers, doctors, and hospitals have all agreed in advance to work under the health maintenance organization's guidelines and restrictions, which guarantees a certain standard of care for afflicted individuals. As HMOs limit their health insurance coverage to these approved doctors and hospitals, it practically guarantees customers for them. But sometimes an individual with a HMO insurance plan might be unaware which hospitals are covered under their insurance. For this reason, a hospital or provider would use health insurance advertising to get the word out that they are HMO approved.

Preferred provider plans, on the other hand, are a combination of a HMO and a fee for service plan. Similar to a HMO, PPOs provide lower costs to consumers using their preferred providers, doctors and hospitals. If someone using a PPO wants to use a medical service provider outside of this preferred network, they can, but it will cost them higher fees for their service. While preferred provider plans usually have more expensive premium payments for their members than HMOs, they are far less restrictive than health maintenance organizations, meaning that the insured individual has far more options in their health care. Naturally, if a health care provider is a preferred provider for a PPO health insurance plan, they will want those covered by the plan to know it. That means advertising their PPO health insurance coverage.

Before choosing a health insurance coverage plan, a smart consumer will want to know that there are doctors, hospitals and providers in their area that will be there for them in their time of need. No one wants to hurt themselves and discover that the closest provider under their HMO plan is hours away. Advertising health insurance coverage in crucial for hospitals to ensure that those afflicted individuals know that there is a place in their area they can turn to under their HMO or PPO insurance plan.
