Health Insurance Options For Children From Low Income Families

2010-08-15

It's a no brainer that everyone needs health insurance coverage. This is usually not a problem for those who can afford it, but for low income families, it's a struggle. And worse, children without healthcare insurance can experience health problems that last for years-all because they can't afford medical care.

Fortunately, there is help for children living in low income families. The US Government offers several health insurance plans that can assist families in getting medical treatment for their children. Each health plan, however, differs state by state.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a program that offers health insurance coverage to families earning too much to qualify for Medicaid. States whose health insurance coverage programs are federally approved receive funds from SCHIP to assist uninsured children. Thus, states are permitted to help uninsured children as old as age 19. In addition, states set their own guidelines in regards to the services offered through this program, as well as eligibility. SCHIP funds for each state are determined by the number of uninsured, low-income children as well as the state's healthcare cost. With this federally funded insurance, children can get immunizations, be hospitalized, and make doctor and emergency room visits, at little or no cost.

Medicaid is another joint effort funded by the state and federal government. Although it assists low income families, there is an income restriction. That's why families earning above those restrictions must seek SCHIP.

Medicare is similar to Medicaid. Also funded by the federal government, Medicare helps senior citizens and some people with disabilities to get medical care. You must be a U.S. citizen in order to be eligible. While your income does not play a factor in eligibility, you generally must have contributed to Social Security in order to be covered.

Children's health insurance coverage is also available through COBRA. COBRA helps parents who recently lost their jobs and health coverage plan. COBRA is an extension of the insurance coverage you carried through your employer, with group rates remaining the same.

High-risk pools are available to low-income families in over 30 states. This option fits those unqualified for health insurance coverage.

Additional help is also available for children on medications. Pharmaceutical companies have started patient assistance programs. This allows uninsured people to get their medications.

Finally, community health clinics are present in most areas. They're either free or require a nominal fee. This is a good alternative if you're unable to afford your child's medical care.

No child should have to begin their life with poor health. With all the medical assistance available to low-income families, they too can have medical care and good health like children with health insurance coverage.
