Getting Good Medical Insurance Quotes For College Students

2010-11-05

Medical insurance might be the last thing on college students' minds, but getting good medical insurance quotes for college students is as important as their college choices or tuition costs. While many colleges do offer medical insurance, the medical coverage through these schools may not cover anything but the basics. If you are looking at pre-existing medical conditions and costly and specialized medical treatments, or if you just want a comprehensive medical plan, check out medical insurance for students.

The different types of medical insurance can be very confusing if you have never looked at good medical insurance quotes for college students before. Two major types of medical insurance are HMO and PPO insurance.

HMO stands for a health maintenance organization. HMO insurance is characterized by contracting with specific doctors, clinics, hospitals and other medical providers for care. One main feature of HMO insurance is choosing a primary care physician (PCP). A student would visit the PCP for most medical conditions. If specialty care is required, the PCP authorizes a referral to a doctor or clinic dealing with the specialized care required. Some HMOs do not require a student to choose a PCP or get referrals for specialists. HMO insurance decides the necessary care for specific medical situations through a series of guidelines that need to be followed for the insurance to cover the cost of care. HMO insurance for college students typically charges lower co-pays for care that would be considered preventative, such as physicals and immunizations. Premiums tend to be more costly for HMO medical insurance.

PPO insurance, also known as a preferred provider organization, operates with a network of health care providers. PPO insurance acts like a discount plan for health care. The network doctors charge a lower price for medical procedures, and the PPO insurance covers part of it. The out-of-pocket costs are usually higher with PPO insurance, between high deductibles and co-insurance. Students would also have to pay higher amounts for out-of-network coverage.

You will need to compare quotes to determine the best medical insurance for students. The premium cost is just one consideration. Your unique medical situation might be better served by an HMO, but a PPO could work out if you want to keep lower premiums. The type of services covered varies greatly from company to company. Co-pays and co-insurance also determine how much the insurance plan is going to cost you out-of-pocket. College students do not need to rely on using the default medical insurance provided through their school. With a bit of searching for medical insurance quotes and some time, you can find medical coverage that suits your situation and your college budget.
