Deciding On A Deductible For Health Insurance Coverage
2010-06-28
There is a saying that goes you can't put a price on your health, but in this day and age price matters for everything. As much as you might wish it were different, the fact remains the same; health insurance is not always cheap. So, making decisions about our health insurance are not always easy as there are a lot of factors to consider. One of those issues is deciding on what the deductible should be for your health insurance. This decision isn't easy but if you think through a couple of important things, then it can make your decision all the better.
The first thing you need to settle on when deciding your deductible is that you must assume your deductible will be spent. You cannot set a deductible thinking that you will never incur those costs. You must set a price knowing that you will be forced to spend that money. This should be your first indication of how much you can afford.
Another factor in knowing just how much your initial cost should be is by knowing your family's current health situation. If your spouse has a medical condition, whether it is something known for a long time or a newly diagnosed thing, there is much advantage in knowing the situation before you decide how much you can take of the top financially.
Let's say your family member has serious back issues. You know that this will easily mean multiple doctor visits and if something goes wrong, and we must plan for it, then you will be paying for a hospital visit. So, determine exactly how much your family has going on medically. This is an important question, as you will ask because this question alone can save you a ton of money.
Another factor to consider is if, while being able to predict what is ahead can save you a lot of money, it isn't the only way to have a little more shared than this. Being able to anticipate the need for a doctor matters as well. Being able to see that someone is just a day or two away from a doctor's office and knowing that you will be making the trip means another uncovered trip and more of a chance to save money.
Understanding that predicting the future isn't easy. Finding an affordable health insurance is not either, but both require someone who is patient with both and expects results that everyone can appreciate. So, just making sure that you are willing to spend the money you set aside for the deductible and having a firm grasp on all you know, is enough to make a great decision.
