Aetna was the first national, full-service health insurance company to offer a consumer-directed healthcare plan. Currently, Aetna's services extend to over 18 million medical members, 14 million dental members and over 10 million pharmacy members. Their healthcare networks include 96,000 healthcare professionals, over half-a-million primary care doctors and specialists and over 5,000 hospitals.
Based in Hartford, CN, Aetna health insurance's history can be traced all the way back to 1850 when the company organized an Annuity Fund to sell life insurance. Awed by the power of Sicilian volcano Mt. Etna, the upstart venture was named Aetna.
After steady and significant growth through the second half of the 19th century, Aetna entered the field of health insurance in 1899. Originally, you could only purchase Aetna health insurance if you were already covered by their life or accident policies. By 1907, Aetna had even expanded to automobile coverage. When the United States entered World War I, Aetna used its financial power to provide large amounts of insurance needed to bond contractors involved in government works. They were also crucial in helping to fund the war effort by selling millions of Liberty Bonds. Through the 1930s, Aetna helped to bond the construction of such public works as the National Archives Building in Washington, DC and the Hoover Dam. In the 40s, they bonded the construction of seven U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and provided insurance coverage for the Manhattan project - an extensive experiment that eventually led to the production of the world's first atomic bomb.
Aetna health insurance continued to find incredible success through the rest of the 20th century and has continued that success into the 21st. Their diversified approach to healthcare has paid dividends. The company still hangs its hat on their ability to help people reach health and financial security through easy access to high-quality, cost-effective and safe healthcare. Their 156-year heritage has helped them maintain excellent cooperation with doctors, hospitals and patients. Aetna is committed to maintaining their strong presence in the market by fostering a company climate that is based in customer satisfaction by way of innovative products and clear member choices. This commitment earned Aetna FORTUNE magazine's 2010 "Most Admired Company in Health" award.
